On group velocity and spatial damping of diurnal continental shelf waves

چکیده

Diurnal continental shelf waves (CSWs) are studied theoretically for an idealized topography. Wave attenuation is caused by the exchange of fluid on sloping with inner region through a permeable coastline. As example, we consider outside Lofoten-Vesterålen in north Norway. Here CSWs diurnal tidal frequencies possible small wave number range centered around zero group velocity. A previous investigation Robin condition (a weighted combination Dirichlet and Neumann conditions) at boundary has shown that spatial damping coefficient becomes infinitely large when velocity approaches zero. demonstrate this not result mathematical formulation, but reflects physical reality. We show modelling highly convoluted archipelagic as series densely packed vertical Hele Shaw cells. By comparing two ways describing coastal (Robin/Hele Shaw), may express parameter terms parameters (permeability, eddy viscosity) characterize flow porous shelf. The radiation stresses drive Lagrangian mean currents same cases. This means current distribution over unaltered compare case case.

Nonlinear internal waves over New Jersey’s continental shelf

[1] Ship and mooring data collected off the coast of New Jersey are used to describe the nonlinear internal wave (NLIW) field and the background oceanographic conditions that formed the waveguide on the shelf. The subinertial, inertial, and tidal circulation are described in detail, and the background fluid state is characterized using the coefficients of the extendedKorteweg–deVries equation. ...

Generation and Propagation of Internal Solitary Waves on the Continental Shelf and Slope

There are two principal objectives. The first is to develop and refine amplitude evolution equations of the Korteweg-de Vries type to the point where they can be used as validated models for the propagation of internal solitary waves. The second is to undertake a major re-examination of the generation process, using a combination of theoretical and numerical analyses, and emphasising the distin...

Spatial scaling of recruitment in four continental shelf fishes

With the recent decline of several exploited populations of northwest Atlantic fishes, effort has been directed toward understanding the scales at which recruitment varies along with the deterministic processes underlying this variability. Using surveys from 3 research submersible cruises (1994, 1997, 1998), we examined the distributions of 4 species of recently settled groundfish in relation t...

Generation of Internal Tides and Internal Solitary Waves on the Continental Shelf

There are two principal objectives. The first is to continue the development of amplitude evolution equations of the Korteweg-de Vries type with a main focus on topographic effects, and on the associated effects of refraction and friction. The second is to undertake a major re-examination of the generation process, using a combination of theoretical and numerical analyses, and emphasising the d...

Mode 2 waves on the continental shelf: Ephemeral components of the nonlinear internal wavefield

[1] Shoreward propagating, mode 2 nonlinear waves appear sporadically in mooring records obtained off the coast of New Jersey in the summer of 2006. Individual mode 2 packets were tracked between two moorings separated by 1 km; however, packets could not be tracked between moorings separated by greater distances from one another (∼10 km). The inability to track individual packets large distance...
